Marshall gets favourite backers off to great start at Christmas meeting

A well-timed finish by Kyle Marshall got favourite Lilliburlero up for a win in the Dunstan Horsefeeds Mobile Pace at Cambridge Raceway’s Christmas Eve meeting.

Drawn awkwardly on the second row, Marshall was forced to settle four back on the fence for most of the 2200m race.

With half a lap to go, Marshall hooked the Ross Paynter-trained Lilliburlero out and accelerated to challenge the leaders while three wide at the turn.

Marshall willed the three-year-old filly down the straight, holding off a strong finish from Nirvana Franco, to get home by a head.

The win provided connections with a $6.050 winning stake, taking lifetime earnings to more than $10,000 from her eight raceday starts.

At the tote, the mare paid $3.30 for the win and $1.50 for the place.
