Son Of Mac wins fresh up with front-running display at Cambridge Raceway

Stable star Son Of Mac has begun his fresh campaign with a front-running win at Cambridge Raceway, beating hot pot Merlin by 3/4 length.

The three-year-old bay colt, trained by Kyle Marshall, shot away from the mobile barrier to take up a handy position, one off the rail.

But with a lap to go in the 1700m race, driver Tony Herlihy confidently took Son Of Mac to the front and controlled the pace.

With the finish post in sight, hot favourite Merlin — the winner of his first eight races, and $200,000 in stakes — was let loose but he could not catch the home track hero.

The win provided Son Of Mac’s connections with almost $8,000, taking lifetime earnings to almost $36,000 from his seven raceday starts.

At the tote, Son Of Mac paid $8.00 for the win and $2.50 for the place.
