Lilliburlero divebombs race leader to win by a nose for driver Marshall

posted in: Drives, News

A patient and confident drive by Kyle Marshall got pacer Lilliburlero up for a thrilling win, divebombing race leader Ideal Tomado on the finish line at Cambridge Raceway.

The four-year-old mare, trained by Ross Paynter, drew awkwardly at the mobile start and had to find a position four-wide after starting from six at the gate.

Marshall dropped her towards the rear of the 13-strong field, content to conserve her energy for later in the race.

With 600m to go, Lilliburlero still had 11 rivals in front of her but Marshall set her alight around the final bend, swooping from out wide to have the last run at the leaders.

Lilliburlero, the fifth favourite on the tote, grabbed the win by a nose.

The win provided connections with a $6,450 winning stake, taking lifetime earnings to more than $17,000 from her 12 raceday starts.

At the tote, Lilliburlero paid $14.20 for the win and $3.80 for the place.
