Son Of Mac goes oh-so-close in $200,000 thriller at Cambridge Raceway

Up-and-coming three-year-old Son Of Mac has come fourth in the $200,000 NZB Standardbred Harness Million feature but he gave his supporters a great run for their money.

In a thrilling finish, the bay colt, trained by Kyle Marshall, was one of five horses to finish within a length of the winner, even money favourite Merlin.

Drawn seven at the mobile barrier, driver Tony Herlihy took Son Of Mac forward and worked him into a second spot, one off the rail.

When the final turn came, the field opened up, with Merlin charging down the outside and others trying to hold onto their places.

The photo finish shows how close the finish was — Son Of Mac (8) was between runner-up Sooner The Bettor (4) on the rail and winner Merlin (11).

Son Of Mac was beaten by a head, head, nose.

However, the result provided $8,200 in winnings, taking Son Of Mac’s lifetime earnings to more than $52,000 from nine starts, of which three have been wins.
